Lawyer by day, keytar player by night: Australia’s 2023 Eurovision representative is set to hit the stage this Friday!

This week, Voyager, a pop-metal band made up of Danny Estrin (vocals, keytar), Simone Dow (guitar), Scott Kay (guitar), Alex Vanion (bass), and Ash Doodkorte (drums) will compete to make it to the Grand Final of the 2023 Eurovision Competition.

However, this pop-metal band has a unique twist; its lead singer, Danny Estrin spends his days working as a boutique law partner at Estrin Saul Lawyers, West Australia's largest specialist immigration law firm and winner of Lawyers Weekly boutique law firm of the year in 2019.

In an interview with Lawyers Weekly, Estrin explained how his passion for music has enhanced his skill set as a lawyer. He commented, "It's not just the musical brain that helps with lateral thinking in the legal context. Touring the world with Voyager over the last 20 years has exposed me to people, situations, and experiences that are massive assets to my skill set." Estrin also noted how his time with Voyager has helped him develop his people skills in dealing with different cultures, systems, and networks.

As law students, we often get so wrapped up in our studies that we forget to pursue our other interests, especially when exam season is around the corner. But Estrin's story serves as a reminder that maintaining a passion outside of the legal profession can be just as crucial to adding value to your professional legal life and achieving a healthy work-life balance in our later careers. Although he admits that finding that balance wasn't easy and is often a job in itself, Estrin believes that his creative "right-brain" side - the music - is what makes it all worthwhile. He says, "It's food for the soul, and without it, I wouldn't be where I am today."

If you want to see some of Estrin’s vocals in action and vote Voyager into the Eurovision Grand-Final, tune into SBS this Friday 12 May at 5:00AM AEST for the live 2nd Semi-Final of the competition. Alternatively, you can see the recorded version on Friday 12 May at 7:30pm AEST or find more details about the stream here. Good luck to Voyager!
