2020 Co-Founders & Co-Presidents

COCO

Hiya, I’m Coco - resident co-pres and Greta Gerwig wannabe. While finishing off my Bachelor of Fine Arts (yes, B-FARTS, haha) in Screenwriting down south at the other campus, I figured out that (a) I wasn’t ready for the outside world; and (b) whilst I loved writing/making/watching all things film and telly, I had become exceedingly passionate about artists’ rights in the entertainment sphere. Injustice had come to characterise the field - it was/is a period dedicated to #MeToo and wavering press freedom - so next came law, and next came me sitting here writing perhaps not the next Lady Bird but perhaps, one day, something helpful.

Shout-out to PT (Peter Turner, and a personal trainer of sorts), Shaun Miller, and the wonderful first FAME team for hearing my whack idea to initiate the oxymoronic creatively-focussed-law-group, and running with it. We’re all mad ‘round here.

PETER

Hey there! I’m Peter and I’m one of the Co-Presidents of FAME Law Students’ Association! After spending time engaged in various positions in student societies, I decided to nourish my passion for the arts by creating this platform with my friend and fellow co-president, Coco!

I have previously studied a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications and one day hope to work in the area of media law! In my spare time, I like to get involved in all aspects of theatre on and off the stage! Hopefully, FAME can be a space for many law students who share similar passions for years to come.

2020 Treasurer & Careers and Sponsorship Director

NAT

Hello! I’m Nat, and I am the Treasurer of FAME LSA. I came into my JD from Bachelor of Arts where I tell people that I majored in International Politics, but in reality, I spent a majority of my time running around the Union Theatre. I’ve produced a number of successful productions through student theatre at Melbourne Uni, as well as independently. Art and performance has always been my outlet and I’m very excited to be able to provide that outlet to other like-minded students, and to combine it with our legal studies.

SAMARA

Hi everyone! I’m Samara, the Careers and Sponsorship Coordinator for FAME LSA. A third year JD student now, I previously completed a BA in Psychology and English & Theatre Studies. I love my TV comedies, my dancing (usually ballet), yoga, piano and my cuddly cat. I’m super excited to learn and share with you all what it could be like to work as a lawyer in the film, art, media and entertainment space. From putting together festivals and films to protecting artists’ rights, let’s find out how FAME and the law collide, together!

2020 Engagement Directors

ART

I’m Art (aptly named), I’m not only a third-year law student but also the external engagements officer for FAME. My background in the arts lies with me being an enjoyer of most things creative but a lover of music. I’ve previously been a community radio host and DJ around about. I’m excited about helping to make FAME a fun and inviting society for all law students interested in the arts, with exciting opportunities and events.

REETIKA

Hi pals! I’m Reetika and I’m a third-year law student and Internal Engagement Officer for FAME. I’m also Paralegal Associate for Guest Work Agency, an art advisory and law firm, Board Administrator for the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, Editorial Assistant for the Public Law Review and a volunteer at Heide Museum of Modern Art. I previously studied a Bachelor of Arts (Art History and Criminology) and would love to specialise in arts law one day to combine my passions and experience.

2020 Communications Director

2020 Ambassadors

Hey, I’m Ash and I am one of the FAME LSA Ambassadors! I am an Italian/Lebanese (and proud) law student and actress who loves a good horror film, crime drama and just TV altogether really. One thing to know about me is that I am an avid supporter of the Australian Film and Television industry. I will take any chance I can get to recommend a wholesome Aussie flick or debate why Wentworth is ten times better than Orange is the New Black (sorry, not sorry). I’m always looking for new stuff to watch, so feel free to send any recommendations my way!

Hello! I’m Laura, a second year JD student and now also: FAME Ambassador. The arts has kept me plenty busy throughout my life: dancing, costume making, creative-writing, film and theatre producing, the odd bit of scribblin’, I’ve dabbled in it all. I think the intersection between the creative arts and law is full of opportunity for meaningful and interesting work. I’m so excited to be a part of FAME to help infuse our sometimes mundane legal lives with some juicy artistic content. Holla at me for any film/book/dance/music talk I love it all.

Hello! I’m Caiti, your certified movie nerd (watched 300 films last year) and resident gaming enthusiast. I worked in design and marketing in Hong Kong, and then produced, photographed and directed my way through film school in Sydney. Now I’m a first-year JD student, and I hope to eventually re-enter the creative industries from a unique angle.

I feel so lucky to be one of the 2020 FAME ambassadors! Hit me up for movie recommendations (or give me some), if you need someone to game with, or if you can help me learn Cantonese!

My name is Matt and I am a (Second) Year JD Student.

  • I have been an artsy kid since forever, diving into music, acting, singing, dancing and all of the in-betweens.

  • I picked up the piano as a very little man and cello a little later on along with singing!.

  • I danced ballet for 10 years as an overly-enthusiastic young man.

  • Whilst high school drama class is...well...drama class ;) It led to me performing in a wide array of theatre performances and even some directing.

  • For me, FAME represents an important transition in appreciation for the arts. It recognises it as the important cultural and professional space that it is.

  • Whilst so many JD students have a passion for the arts, we at FAME are hoping to provide a space for that passion to grow.

.

Hi! I am Dion: second year JD student and FAME Ambassador. I believe that the law guides the human psyche from the top-down, whilst entertainment guides it from the bottom-up. This is what makes it such a dynamic, intriguing, and best of all, entertaining area of law.

Having worked in the film industry in Los Angeles before law school, I have seen firsthand how important the law is in even the most creative industries. My goal at FAME is to spread awareness around this niche area of law and how fun it can be.

½ dozen things about me:

1. Scorpio (ooooooo watch out…)

2. Favourite Film: Breakfast at Tiffany’s OR The Parent Trap (Lindsay Lohan). I can’t pick one.

3. Current Favourite Song: Feelings by Lauv

4. Favourite TV Show: Gilmore Girls

5. Current Obsession: Animal Crossing (hmu for friend code) and TikTok (don’t follow me)

6. Controversial Opinion: HSM 2 > HSM

Hey, everyone! My name is Leah and I am a First Year JD student! Here is a quick run-down of who I am:

-   I am part of the 0.0000001% of students coming from a Bachelor of Music background

-   I play piano, ukulele and sing, and and learnt how to compose and produce ~tunes~ during my Bachelor degree

-   I am of proud wog (Italian and Greek descent) so be guaranteed that I always have food on me and something to complain about

-   I love to dance, read books, watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Spongebob, and be surrounded by friends and people who inspire me

-   I wrote this on the same day I finished my torts exam and died my hair purple, so if that doesn’t tell you about who I am as a person and how I am coping in our current global climate, then I don’t know what will

In all seriousness, I am so excited to be a FAME Ambassador for 2020 and for all of the initiatives we will be bringing forward! I am very grateful to be a part of such an amazing team of people who foster the value of creativity in a world where it is too easy to forget to appreciate artists, not just in the legal sphere, but everywhere.

Feel free to shoot me a dm if you need a DJ, some food, or a stimulating conversation.

Peace and love,

Leah :))
